I am very new to Linux and I am curious as to anything really cool that I am missing.

I have ut2004, quake3, wolfenstein, enemy territory, doom3, and baldurs gate2 installed.

Is there anything else that is really fun that I am missing out on?

Also, I know this topic has probably been gone over and over.
But I am a newb so please humor me.

there's plenty of cooler things than kids games.... ethereal rocks, fluxbox is great, mplayer r0X0rzzz (is that what the skiddies say?)

Wow! that seemed a little rude. "sarky" as the kids say.

However, I am 30 years old, have a degree in computer science, program for a living, married with a kid on the way, and happen to enjoy computer games. I also enjoy the things that you mentioned.

I am asking because of the fact that I am NEW to Linux and there seems to be a whole lot available. I simply wanted to catch on to some of the best.

Also I accidently posted in the wrong forum. I will report this to a mod and see if I can get it moved.

I'll move you to games. Unfortunately I can't really contribute to the conversation, I'm not a gamer myself.

I'm not sure if you're only talking about games, but you might be interested in MythTV. It's similar to Windows Media Center but is much improved.

I'll probably be setting it up quite soon.

Neverwinter Nights runs natively on Linux, also.

As far as games are concerned, Windows is king, most companies only make games for windows, it's the largest market for PC based games, period.

What we do get for games are usually outstanding.
some examples are:

Neverwinter Nights -- one of my all time favorites, much more stable under linux.
Doom 3 -- Running Doom 3 under linux is equivlent to running Doom 3 on a Windows machine which is 500Mhz Faster.
StarCraft -- Runs faster under Wine than it ever did under native Windows.

WineX -- love it or hate it, will make many of your Windows games run just fine under Linux.
(if you want WineX I Recommend only a single 3 mo subscription ($15) as they do not release often enough, or try hard enough to fully support more games)

Wine -- Mother of WineX, will also run many windows games just fine, and it is OpenSource 100%

There are also some awesome linux games (many of which will also work under Windows)

For racing stuff, there is stuff like TORCS which is completly free, and then there is a very graphically pleasing racer which is free as in beer only. If you have an old copy of freespace 2 sitting around its native on linux I believe as well. A cheap game if you can find a copy is Terminus, comes with native installers for mac, win, and linux. Have only played a little bit of it myself because I have to dig a joystick out, but it seems like a great old space shooter so far.
