I know my system isnt very good for gaming, but Max Payne 1 runs real slow in cedega compared to WinXP, where it runs perfectly.
My system specs are:
Athlon XP 2GHz
128 RAM (yeah, I know)
32 Mb integrated m/b savage video card
Slackware 10.1
Cedega 4.3

As I said, I know I need more RAM and a decent video card, but under WinXP it runs perfectly.
My question is, have I misconfigured cedega or the kernel CPU/IO scheduler? Or do I simply need better hardware to play this game under linux?

Forgive me if this question is dumb, but I need to know. Anyway, Im getting more RAM in a few days.

The bottleneck is that integrated video card, and the amount of RAM. You need to get an nVidia-based graphics card. I would go with one that is a generation behind for price savings... and go to 512 MB of RAM.

If you do that you should be fine. the 2 GHz processor is not the problem.
I'm surprised you've gotten it to run at all.

I should get the RAM in a few days, but I'll have to wait for the nVidia.
The only thing that keeps me unrestul, is the fact the game runs smoothly under WinXP, on the same hardware. I guess I just can't get rid of WinXP at least for gaming (until I get a lot of RAM and a good video card).

Think about what you've said there,...
You're confused you say,... because you don't understand why the game will rund under lower systems specs natively as opposed to emulation (yeah I know technically wine is not emulation and Cedega is wine... )... ?!?!?

You have to have a little better selection of hardware if you are going to be emulating an environment that is foreign to the OS you're running... That's a simple fact of life. Wine accomplishes some of its tasks by passing off Linux system resources as Windoze ones,... and that takes some overhead... plain and simple. You can't expect there to be the same minimum system requirements.

That said. I run Jedi Academy faster under Cedega/WineX than I ever ran Jedi Outcast natively (when I was duel booting with Win98).

You're right with that.
But what if Max Payne had a native linux binary? Would it run as smooth as the WinXP version under the same hardware, or even better?

I'm not saying WinXP is better for gaming, it's just that I'm new to linux gaming and I don't know what to expect under my current low system specs. Should the linux native games run as good as the window$ versions?

Probably yes...

If not slightly better. As long as they are optimized. Doom 3 for example isn't, and so runs slightly better on Windoze, normalizing for disk access (which is better in Linux). Quake 3 is optimized,... and runs somewhat better. I should note though that the native Linux binaries usually are more stable.

I get better performance with the native titles that I run than I got with their Windoze versions... on the same hardware.

How did you install Cedega? I am having problems myself.

JaseP, thanks for the info Is there any scheduler (io, cpu) that is IDEAL for gaming? I'm currentli using 2.6.7's anticipatory. I read that the staircase is the best, is this true? Anyway, I tried aplying the patch for 2.6.7, but it didn't work. The new option doesn't show up in xconfig (I activated "show all options"). Sorry, maybe I should start another thread for this question...?


ksm89, I downloaded cedega 4.3 via bittorrent. The file was in .tgz format, so I simply installpkg-ed it under Slackware. If I remember correctly, I found the torrent on www.torrentspy.com.

The OP didn't say which window manager he's using. If he's short on RAM he might want to try running a much lighter (than Gnome or KDE) window manager like blackbox and see if that makes a difference.

Actually I'm currently using fluxbox and found an AWESOME window manager. Light and stable, great for a low ram system. Thanks for the advice anyway
