Question Quake 2 Exp: Ground Zero and The Reckoning Bugs(?)

Hi!

I've just purchased the Special Edition of Quake 4 and it comes also with Quake 2 and both expansions: Ground Zero and The Reckoning, I thought it could be nice to try it on Linux. While Quake2 runs perfectly by using the Linux binary from Ubuntu repositories, I've had problems with both expansions:

quake2 +set game rogue << Starts Ground Zero
Runs perfectly. The problem is that some items on the map are not working. For example, right at the beginning of stage one, there's a switch that you've to press to call an elevator. The problem is... well... there's no elevator . The only way to finish the map is by using the NOCLIP cheat and "flying" instead of using the elevator.

quake2 +set game xatrix << Starts The Reckoning.
Game starts fine. Trying to skip the Xatrix logo when starting a new game can crash. This is passible though. The real problem is in the game. Just like Ground Zero, there is something missing. I blast through the beginning of the first mission and there are no enemies. I mean it... all models/enemies are not there. You can just move forward and finish the level... I guess, this will make the game a bit too easy won't it?

Does anyone else had problems with Quake2 expansions in Linux? I know Quake2 runs perfectly fine with Wine, so maybe I should use Wine to play the expansions as well? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I play Quake2 (includes both expansion) on Linux too, and it is running well

You may want to use third-party ports of quake2, like quake2forge, icculus quake2 (I use this one), or another.

icculus quake2 = http://icculus.org/quake2/
quake2forge = http://www.quakeforge.net

there is also java port of quake2 ... but don't know how is the performance

jake2 = http://www.bytonic.de/html/jake2.html

Thanks for your quick reply kassle! I really appreciated it. I will try the other binaries as you've suggested. Pretty cool to see that there's a Quake 2 port written in Java. I saw (but never tested myself) Jake before (Quake 1 port).

Anyway, thanks once again!

Hmmmm... weird. After using the icullus instaler, I get no sound at all. I loved the slightly updated gfx engine though. It's way better than the buggy quake2max I think.

Anyway, I went right into the Ground Zero game and noticed that the elevator is still missing. I made sure to remove all config files I had before and even deleted all the *.paks to be sure that it was not that causing me problems. Still no go.

I think that the packages ID packed on this Special Edition of Quake 4 are modified(?). I will try wine out again ^_^
