You are probably using the new glxgears from Xorg 7.0 (The modular tree) where they have stopped printing out fps numbers by default. Try "glxgears -printfps" to see those fps numbers which aren't that closely related to game performance.

With Xorg 6.9 and Nvidia drivers 0.8175 I had about 3500 fps in Glxgears. I upgraded to Nvidia drivers 0.8756 and suddenly had 6000 fps. Now with Xorg 7.0 I'm back to 3500ish fps.
Performance in the games stayed virtually identical.

Glxgears are a benchmark only of Glxgears performance.
