Myth 2 Crash

I just picked up loki's port of Myth 2. It was one of my favorite games on windows, I was stoked to see it for linux. One problem: after I install it, when I try and run it, I get this:

"BUG! (Segmentation Fault) Going down hard...
Segmentation fault"

I went to loki's site, found the myth 2 FAQ: http://faqs.lokigames.com/myth2faq.html#55 and found something about that error:

"5.5 After I install the game, it won't start, and gives me a 'Segmentation Fault' error. I can't run the game at all.

Chances are, you're running a Soundblaster Live! card with older drivers from Creative Labs. Please update your drivers from Creative's Linux sound driver page."

I am running a SB live, but it has the same problem when I install it on an old box with an ancient ISA AWE 32.
Both machines run Slackware 10. I'm using Alsa (I think myth2 wants OSS) and haven't had sound problems with any other programs. What can I change to get this working?

You need to use the "loki_update" tool, update myth, and it should work fine.

Hope that works!

Cya!

There is also a patch on the internet, it may be different from the one "loki_update" downloads, but I am not sure.

I download the 1.3.1e patch and applied it, but it changes nothing. If I run loki_update, it just goes through an endless loop of updating itself and crashing. Is 1.3.1e the patch it applies?

Same crash.

I just tried to update loki_update to 1.0.13, but it crashes too, saying

"Uncompressing Loki Update Tool 1.0.13 Install................................................
This installation doesn't support glibc-2.1 on Linux / x86"

Then I uninstalled completely, and ran the new intaller I found on a loki mirror. It completed successfully, but when I tried to run the game, I got this error:

"The Myth II 1.3e patch update did not complete correctly."

What else can I do?

There is an updated installer located here.

ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/lokigames/i...nstall-x86.run

Only problem is, even with this newer installer the game will still fail to run but will install.
If you look on this page 3rd post from the bottom you'll see my How-to for Myth2, unfortunately I myself have been unable to get this game to run on a very modern distro. I assume MDK10 will have the same issue as I did. I am currently looking into this problem but am running out of things to try.

with the patch given in the howto (myth2-1.3e-unified-x86.run) I was able to get the game to start. It'll play the intro, but it crashes if you try and get past it. I tried again and it didn't play the intro this time, and instead put me at the main screen. When I tried to start a new game however, it played the intro movie, then crapped out on mt.

This is progress, but still not a solution.

This is the error I got:

Myth II running under Linux ------------
Scanning for software devices...
Found 1 to use

BUG! (Segmentation Fault) Going down hard...

Another thing: There's no open GL option in the preferences, just software. Might have something to do with the crashing

I can play the single player levels with software rendering if I start a co-op multiplayer game. Anybody have any clue how I can get open GL going?

I am getting the same problems as DeadlyMuffin.
Those of you who have this game working, what version of glibc / kernel headers are you using?

Cheers.

Steve.

There seem to be 2 distinct and seperate problems with running this game on a modren distribution:
* Video Playback
* OpenGL renderer

I managed to solve the first problem easily enough: get rid of the cutscenes. Just delete or move the 'cutscenes' directory in the myth 2 directory, and the game skips over them and everything works fine. (At least after a cursorary 2 minutes of playing the first map.)

However, it still only uses the SDL/X11 software renderer. This seems to be fast enough on modren (+1GHz) machine, but still, if someone could figure out how to get the OpenGL render working ..

FYI I'm using:
Debian Unstable (Sid)
Myth 2 1.3e
NVidia video card
