Keyboard problems (USB?) with old loki games

Hi, I experience strange behavior with my old loki games, unreal tournament and unreal tournament 2004:

In ut, special moves (double-tapping on a direction key) do not work any more, everything else does. In ut2k4, movement doesn't work at all, but the keyboard works normally in the menus.

I'm using a USB keyboard and I /feel/ this could be part of the problem (but I have no idea how to verify that assumption). Any ideas for me what to try for diagnosis and, hopefully, resolution?

for diagnosis try plugging another keyboard or connect it using USB to PS/2 adapter. Some usb keyboard can be very flaky in linux, my MS Curve 2000 keyboard doesn't work in grub loader, although Apple USB does zzzzz
