Intermittent latency and disconnects

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 using the latest stable version of wine.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a Broadcom BCM94311MCG. After a few minutes or even hours of playing WoW and/or using ventrilo with wine, I notice severe latency, and I eventually stop receiving any data from the server before being disconnected from the game or vent. If I restart the game and relogin, the game goes back to normal for a little while, but it seems as if the initial lag spike is desynchronizing me from the server resulting in an eventual disconnect. This is a REALLY annoying bug, especially because everything else (performance etc) works perfectly.

After installing and updating ubuntu (about 2 weeks ago), my wireless card was detected and functioned correctly without any additional configuration. I've tried replacing network manager with wicd but the problem still persists. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
