Question id Games Crash Xserver!?

I just recently reinstalled Debian 3.1 Sarge. The only issue I've had so far is that for some freak reason id Software games give me trouble video wise.

When I load up Quake 3 and I try to change the video setting in game, it just crashes my Xserver and logs me out. If I try it again and exit the game normally, it does successfully, but it only gives me the 800x600 pixels of the top left corner of my screen. If I move my mouse out of the screen it crashes my Xserver and logs me out. The exact same thing happens with Doom 3, and I'll assume Quake 4 when I get it.

My other games work perfectly fine, UT2004, Cedega games, etc.

BFG 6600GT OC, latest nVidia drivers, XFree86, etc. Where would there logs be of this? Perhaps the answer is in there.

Thanks.

Logs will probably end up in /var/log/Xorg.xxx (dunno for sure, just look in the /var/log directory.. you'll find it). Are you sure the resolution you are trying to use is in the xorg.conf file? Oh and try running the games with some debug option (check the site for how to do it) or run it through trace. It could be trying to load some lib that you don't have for example.

I am succesfully running both Quake 4 and Doom 3 with 5.1 sound on my Linux box.. it's good

Sweet! Good to hear that.

I'm running XFree86 since I'm running "stable". Probably won't make a difference. I'll check the logs when I get home. What's this "trace" you speak of?

This is weird though cause when I had Sarge installed before my games never game me these problems.

I couldn't find anything in any logs, probably because I don't know what I'm looking for.

The default resolution in Q3 is 640x480. I realized that I didn't have that res in my XF86config, so I put those entries in. Still doesn't work.

Is there some output I could get somehow to post on here?

Hmm, oddly enough I've discovoured the issue. I have 1600x1200 resolution set to my highest setting in my XF86config. I have been running my desktop at 1280x1024. I chamged it to 1600x1200 and then attempted to load Quake3. I changed the in game resolution and everythying worked fine! It even exits fine aswell. The whole thing seems odd to me, but at least now I know what the issue was.
