How to get WINE/W.I.N.E. to play 15 year old games

Back when the WINE version was pre-V1, I had successfully played games such as Thief, Thief2, System Shock, and other such games.

A few weeks ago I tried to use WINE to play these "old {rectum}" games, to no avail.

Can these old game work on the recent version of WINE, or do I need to get the pre-V1 version of WINE, if there are readily even available anymore.

Just asking.

Thank you for your time, and have a good day!

Might be a way using dosbox.

However wine usually is backwards compatible assuming that you have the correct build.

It is possible that your modern system is 64bit.

No reason to expect an older version of WINE to work better. If they don't "just work", then try creating a 32-bit prefix.

CRAP..... 32-bit...
Well, that is probably the solution.
I will call this [SOLVED] and if it doesn't work, I will ask again..

Thank you, and have a good day!

You know what I actually meant, right?

Code:
WINEARCH=win32 winecfg /path/to/prefix # /path/to/prefix must not exist and will be created
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/prefix winetricks #as needed
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/prefix game.exe
