Angry FreeCiv Help/ FC3 RPM?

I'm tryin to get freeciv goin here, and it seems to be much more trouble than expected to get a game goin. I got the source (version 2.0.7) downloaded and it won't compile as per the directions in the INSTALL.txt file. Before I get into whatever troubles I'm having with compiling this, I think there's got to be an RPM to get it installed. A YUM search only returns ver 1.1.4, which is being phased out in favor of 2.x. I have Dag-Weirs and FreshRPMs YUM repos installed. I googled and googled, but can only find an RPM for FC4. An FC3 RPM would be preferred, though if neccessary, I can compile it.

Here goes:

Does this mean I don't have the proper GTK/GTK+ installed? Where does one get an updated GTK? A "yum search GTK+" only returns 1.12. This is way too much work for a goddamn game.
Also worthy of note is that the precompiled packages are all but useless, with not one package being available in the current stable release.

Yeah, you may have to install GTK development libraries to install from source. What version of GTK+ do you have? It would seem that freeciv wants something newer than 1.2.5. Does gtk-config exist on your system?

Just for giggles, why not try the FC4 RPM anyway...

My GTK version is 1.1.2
There is no gtk-config on my system(or should I say, path).

The FC4 RPM borks out. If you want I can post the output of RPM -ivv. It is a source RPM by the way.
I'm gonna look for an updated GTK.

P.S. I was checkin out your homepage, Bulliver, and i must say thats some good html. The RSS of LQ.org especially.

Yeah, you are going to have to update this. Have a look at the fedora core FTP site to look for newer RPMs. You can also search at rpmfind.net. Note that you should also install any development RPMs related to GTK (ie: gtk-devel or similar). This will almost certainly require you to update several other rpms as well.

Yeah, I figured so, but worth a shot right?

Thanks for the props on the site.

you could just use yum package manager to install the correct rpm and all of its dependencies
just get yum and do (as root) #yum install freeciv
that will get you everything you need

I already tried that. YUM installs ver 1.14x, I'm looking to get v2.0x going.

I've been thinking about this, and it seems that upgrading to fc4 would be a god-awful workaround. BUT it's something I've been looking to do anyways. Trouble is, I'd really rather upgrade over the net, and I've not yet found any way to do it.
I started a new thread.

Thanks for all your help.
