Cant play games on a 64 bit with NV 7600 GS!?

Okay, well... lets start with some specifics. I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 the Edgy Eft AMD 64 release. Im using a true MSI AMD 64 board / processor with 1.0 GB RAM and a 200 GB HD. For GFX, I have an NVIDIA 7600 GS. (Non SLI) I successfully installed Ubuntu alongside WIndows XP Pro in a separate partition with no difficulties. Ubuntu boots just fine, and I was able to get updates and connect to the internet no problem. Got the latest 64-bit WINE with all dependencies up and running. My real problem is rather frustrating, however. I installed the Nvidia glx by means of the apt get install - etc, etc console command, and all went as planned. Reboot, shiny white Nvidia logo, 85 hz refresh rate. so far so good. Or is it? I cant seem to run in any other color mode but 24-bit (which I dont plan on getting used to!) also games run (with 3D acceleration) but they SKIP. My machine is *not* the kind of machine you would expect to skip on a cheezy 3D GL billiards game. or space invaders. or pong. its just not right. I wanted to install Forceware for Linux to fix the issue, but I havent the slightest clue how to install the .run file because it always gives me a "path / file access error" or a "that file doesnt exist..." and if I double-click the .run file it just freezes then closes a loading window. Do I perhaps need mainboard drivers with it? I do admit to being relatively new to Linux, but I sincerely want this one to work out, I enjoy Ubuntu a lot.

What, is that too high for you, or do you still believe the 32 bit fairytale? Then read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitdepth#32-bit_color.

I don't really know why you'd have trouble with a 3d billiards game, how much fps do you get with glxgears on it's default size?

the .run file is probably not yet executable. Files downloaded in Linux are by default not executable, but I'm pretty sure if you rightclick on it you should be able to set the permissions right (I don't use gnome, so I don't know the exact way it's done in nautilus).
A sure way to do this is: open a terminal, go the directory where the file was downloaded to (probably Desktop?) with the command
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
Then, use the chmod command to make it executable:
Code:
chmod +x FileNameHere.run
You can use the [tab] button to autocomplete long file/directory names for you.

hmmm...

Oh I know about the 24-bit / 32-bit thing. Its just that I have some programs that tell me they dont support 24-bit color. Okay, so I chmodded the file after setting my directory to ~desktop, annd the console didnt seem to do anything after I input the correct filename, so I assumed it did *something.* I ran the .run file and the activity light stayed lit for about a minute then nothing happened. good times is there a pre-built .deb package to simplify things for Nvidia on AMD64?

woah...

That was odd. I ran glxgears and it was perfectly smooth. I ran billirads and it was perfectly smooth. I ran battle for wesnoth and it was perfectly smooth. Guess im all set. Also, I noticed the screen looks a little "65-herts" ish after playing for a while, even though its set to 85 hz... why?
