Any Linux compatible online multiplayer combat type games?

I have been looking for some good free online multi-player games. Some need you to down load things that are only compatible with Windows or they require Internet Explorer or they may not work right. I am getting a little burnt going through endless lists.

I tried Modern War Militia. I wasn't impressed with it but would like to find something similiar to it. For those who are unfamilar it is basically a war game where you create your state, within a country, build your army, etc and go to war.

I have a new computer and DSL, but I do not have a 3d graphics accelerator anymore, at least for a couple of more months, I hope.

Anyone have any ideas or recomendations for some good games like this?

Thanks

Have you tried America's Army? Its a first person shooter and can be very entertaining if you have friends to play with regularly.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a pretty good, free game.

Well, I see that you don't want to download hundreds of megabytes and you don't have a 128MB NVIDIA grphics card, so I really don't know.

Downloading Hundreds of megabytes is not a problem, neither is memory, cpu, HD space, etc. But the problem does still lay with not having an NVidia card anymore, I have Doom 3 sitting here collecting dust

It's not a FPS but you could try Wesnoth, it's a free multiplayer game and involves combat. I would recommend Duke Nukem 3d (see icculus.org) but you still have to buy the CD for it and it's not free even though you can play it on Linux. You could always try the Duke Nukem 3d demo with Linux.

I looked at Americas Army and it was made by the US army. It seems to be focused on young adults and getting them familiar with how the Army works. Looks like a good game but not exactley what I am looking for. Thanks for the idea though.

Now Wesnoth looks good. I am going to give it a try later today. Thanks.

please help me run games using wineX

Hello, I am a newbie with Linux Operating System and honestly I got a lot of questions upon questions etc. I tried LormaLinux system, SUSE Linux, Redhat 8.0, and I'm trying another one; the Fedora Core, I dont even know the version of it.

I got PCs LAN connected with windows OS in it, and I am currently using it with multiplayer games such as Generals, Half-life, RagnarokOnline, MUonline, and so on and so forth. The reason why I want shift with Linux machine is to get rid with Microsoft Licensing of it's Operating system, although 80% of my machines are Microsoft Licensed, I desire to know and add to my learning aside from Microsoft Operating System.

Can anybody with good heart and loves to help me go ahead with my learning with Linux; provide me a sample script or command using wineX to LAN games, Multiplayer, and perhaps Online Games (Starcraft, Generals, Battle Realms,Ragnarok Online, MU Online, Counterstrike, Warcraft, Red Alert?

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot..

Have you checked Wine
I played a lot of win32 games with it(lion heart, quake2+3, warcraft 3 etc) I only had one issue though, some of the games never had working sound :-)(I dident look to much into it because it dident bother me :-)).
Just check if your game(s) are listed in the wine applications databases
