XFCE4 works with root login only on BLFS SYSTEMD 10.0
Hi Everyone,
Still can't figure this out. When I login with root all of xfce4 works as
should. When I login as normal user power manager, usb drives and such
don't work. I had this happen a long time ago version 8.3 I think and can't remember what it took to get it to work. Any ideas on where I went wrong?
Thanks for help and ideas.
DH
There is a systemd command will let you follow the jounal in real time. So you can try to do something as a regular user and see what the logs say. Probably policy-kit related - you do have polkit-gnome installed? I think that's what XFCE uses for a PK agent.
Hey Bryan and thanks for the reply. I do have polkit-gnome also. I was wondering if I need to put my name here "PolicyKit Daemon Owner" ? I never remember having to do that before. I'm
moving back to Florida in about 3 years where you from?
Check the xorg.0.log after trying to start xfce using startx as reg user. Not rebuilding systemd and dbus after doing xorg-apps throws lots of noobs off.
XFCE starts as user but I don't have full function(usb's,other drives don't automount, shutdown menu all greyed out except for logout icon) as I do when I login with root. Something is keeping me from that.I'v built 8.1,8.3,8.4 and 9.0 and never had this happen. Truly puzzled
"journalctl -f" That's the command. I had to look in the online systemd book as i don't currently use systemd. Just run that in a root terminal and then, as a regular user, try to mount an external drive or try to bring up the shutdown menu.
journalctl -f Is showing me my firewall is active. I can and have been able to mount usb drive with commands . I am wondering if polkit is screwed up and if I had it setup correctly. If I login as root xfce works fine. Just "user" and some apps work but no auto mounting of drives or other partitions either. I make it work some but
just wished it worked as well as 9.0
I had some success by reinstalling polkit . At least the shutdown menu works and
it picks up mu usb drives . Thats better than it was.
Thanks for the help and maybe the rest will workout.
Xorg log has info about devices loading and journalctl/dmesg also. These should be obvious to look at for errors/clues to what you missed or did wrong. Dbus is critical as is PAM. You're not giving us any actual errors.
Saying things don't work isn't how you ask for help.
