what should my base distro be?

i am making a custom distro, specifically for audio recording and production, it will include Ardour, and some advanced DVD/CD writing software... and i was wonering a few questions, like first, what would be agood base disstro to use, i know that debian based distros arent too friendly with ardour....

also, what window manager would you recommend?

You can use whatever you want, you can try them all, just install it in the /opt directory so you can uninstall them if you don't like it. Check out BLFS to see diferent window managers/desktop environments

A Distribution that has a stable gcc is recommended.

I think Slackware is quite good, and debian.

Personally I have had less luck with 4.0 gcc versions, i found 3.x easier.
