Question Question about upgrading Gcc

I have a virtualbox I followed the book of 8.4 - and have kde installed on the box. I upgraded from 8.4.0 to 9.1.0 for gcc

When I start kde I am unable to click anything, wallpaper shows up, icons show up but unable to click anything - Do I have to recompile it for the new compiler to get it working again?

it depends on what do you mean by upgrading gcc. If libc.so has been replaced yes, most probably you need to recompile again.

I updated gcc, and glibc, as described in the book. for the developmental branch: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...ent/index.html

I am still able to compile packages, however when I run "startx" the desktop shows, however nothing is able to be clicked. I'm at a loss - this is on a virtualbox so its more of a learning experience.

You should never upgrade glibc,

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...06/pkgmgt.html

Quote:
If Glibc needs to be upgraded to a newer version, (e.g. from glibc-2.19 to glibc-2.20), it is safer to rebuild LFS.
I have similar experience. I once ignored the warning and my system never booted again. You are so lucky that you can still boot your system...

As a general rule, the primary toolchain in LFS -- kernel headers, glibc, gcc and binutils -- should never be upgraded. You can upgrade everything else.
