./MAKEDEV usb error - dont know hot to make device "usb"

Im tring to install a usb printer and got cups and gnome-print and ghostscript such all setup up but after adding the printer I went to see why it would not print and found no usb devices in /dev and there was no /dev/usb directory.

I tried MAKEDEV and got this error:
Code:
[root@lfs /dev]# ./MAKEDEV usb
./MAKEDEV: don't know how to make device "usb"
I was able to do MAKEDEV lp
I dont know if this is correct or not but Im still unable to print.
I do have USB support in my kernel.

Any help is appreciated.

mknod -m 666 /dev/usblp0 c 180 0

run that command as root. That will make the node you need in /dev then point your browser at http://localhost:631/ and (if cups is running) set up your printer.

Well that create the device. THX!!
But I still cant print.. says media tray empty...

There is paper in it and powered on... and there is no switch to tell the printer wether there is or is not paper.. it decides that after it tries to grab the paper out of the tray.
And the printer works.. ..

It may help to alter /etc/cupsd.conf and set
LogLevel debug
This may give you some usefull info in /var/log/cups/error_log
Or it may not. Printing is hard to get going but if you stick at it you should get there.

Edit - another thought, did you enable
CONFIG_USB_PRINTER=y
on the usb submenu when you compiled your kernel?

Well I got my printer to print... just not with the driver made for it .. LOL .. anyway Im using the HP Deskjet 600 series driver that I assume came with cups and the one I downloaded is a hpijs made for the 630c series printer and gives me errors.

The printer is a HP Deskjet 630C series.

I would like to get the one made for it working as it allows for choosing of catriges to use.. i.e. color mixed to black or use the addon black catrige for black which I would prefer as ink is too expensive.

Anyway, Thanks for your help.
