Machine automation

I want to find a source of the best version of Linux to use for machine automation and code that’s been written already.

If there is a forum or an archive that has what I need for my project, it’s going to be a ground up build.

Can you say/describe (a lot) more about what you mean by:
"machine automation"
And tell us some specifics about the code that's been "written already".

I'd guess you do NOT mean: developing a new Linux distribution from scratch.
Take some time to use the search options at: http://distrowatch.com

Are you familiar with raspberry pi?

Anyway, welcome to LQ and best wishes!!!

Quite a few specialized Linux distros are Gentoo based, Android is most famous of them, but there are smaller projects for embedded devices and so on. Gentoo is not a distro, it is a toolset to build your own Linux and many have taken advantage of this fact. The result is lean installation which does not have any cruft and unnecessary applications. You even don't need to use glibc if you don't want to.

If you literally mean machine automation then look at linuxCNC. It is designed to control CNC machines but also 3D printers, lathes and other similar equipment.

If not then more information about your actual project would be nice if you can post anything.
