Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found.

LFS 6.3
System: Virtualbox 2.0.6
Partitions:
/dev/hda1 /boot
/dev/hda2 /tmp
/dev/hda3 /
/dev/hda5 /home
/dev/hda6 swap
/dev/hda7 /var
/dev/hda8 /usr

Custom Package Management:

Package User method with the packages grafted to /usr/graft/*
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hint...nd_pkg_man.txt
http://www.gormand.com.au/peters/too...l#installation

Issue:
System will not boot errors out at..

kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 292k freed
Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

Have tried googling the problem but cant seem to find anything that fixes the issue... still fairly new to linux so could be anything.

The most likely problem is that the kernel is missing one of the modules needed to access the / file system. If you can find a missing module then either include the module in the kernel with a "y" when you compile the kernel or include the module in your initrd.

Couldn't get it to work by recompiling the kernel so I decided to tar the entire system and put it in a new Virtualbox with only two partitions... one for / and one for swap. I untared it in the new system chrooted into it altered /etc/fstab and setup grub which gave me different results than the other system with multiple partitions and it booted correctly... here is what grub shows from the two different systems...

Multiple Partitions:

grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 15 sectors are embedded.
succeded
Running "install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/menu.lst"... succeeded
Done.

Single Partition:
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 15 sectors are embedded. succeeded
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeeded
Done.
(I had to type this up so there might be errors)

This might not have anything to do with the problem but its the only thing that I see different between the two systems... only thing I can think of is the system is having issues with everything being symlinked and split up on different partitions but that is probably not the issue either so if anyone can help me figure this out I would be greatly appreciate it.

never mind, I was having the same problem the other day, but I was having a configuration problem at the same time. I'm getting my errors mixed up. I did eventually get my system to boot in vmware on a different partition by recompiling the kernel. Maybe I can find my old kernel config and figure out what the filesystem modules look like on the one that doesn't work compared to the one that does.
