gui apps are slow to start on LFS

i had been using my LFS system (still under heavy development) for some time and had no problem like this until now. i boot my system in runlevel 3 and then switch to fluxbox with startx. earlier it used to fire fluxbox the moment i pressed [ENTER] key. but now it waits for about 25-30 seconds before showing any activity. even my CPU does not show the 'busy' LED glowing during this period. From inside fluxbox when i invoke 'rox' filemanager at terminal, it shows similar behaviour.
i compiled LFS to have a faster OS on my old PC. but this problem is defeating the purpose. i dont remember changing any config files. and i cannot recollect a reason for this to happen. it probably started when i installed fonts to get rox running (still i maintain.... i am not sure about the time). i'd be thankful if somebody could help me to get past this problem. i'll be saved of a lot of time and effort in recompiling everything.

My system started out fast too. Fluxbox and firefox started up like that [snap].
Now they take a little longer to load, even though they're still the only programs I installed. (along with the dependencies of course)

I guess the programs are loading more stuff than they used too.
Ex: bookmarks, and other settings.

Other than that I guess it's a mystery.
