Unhappy Giving up!

I'm sorry to say I'm giving up on LFS now. I just can't get past installing glibc in chapter 6, it just gets stuck. I've tried paring it down a bit, but with no joy.

I'll maybe come back to it in a few months, but just got totally hacked off with it.

Have you tried to compile on a different machine/distribution to check if it isn't a problem with your machine/distribution?

I have never made it through with gcc 3.2.2 which seems default with a lot of distro's

Have you verified the package MD5SUM? Have you tried it from a clean build directory? Another thing you may want to check is that you got all the prerequite packages built and installed right.

From my LFS exp. the number one problem I had was corrupted packages!

Hope this helps!

Yes, that's a good point, I'll check whether any of the packages were corrupted. I got as far as glibc in chapter 6, but got stuck at the make check and install parts.

Yea-yea... Same here. I've tryed glibc-2.3.3, 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 - all same error:

In file included from /tools/include/linux/errno.h:4,
from ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/errno.h:25,
from ../sysdeps/unix/i386/sysdep.S:22,

I've seen posts with tha problem more in forums - not found solving yet

you have to use EXACTLY the same glibc as in the book !
stable:
Glibc-2.3.2
unstable:
Glibc-2.3.4-20040510

and you can't in any way use gcc optimizations

I've tryed lots of them... 2.3.2 and 2.3.4-20040510, 20040519, 200406##

Hmm... What about optimizations? What is it? How to use/not use it?

I think I have a Fix for this

I ran into the same problem, I solved it by also copying the asm-generic file to my /tools/include directory.

I think the problem is here in the instructions, in section 5.5 Linux-Libc-Headers the insturctions tell you to run the following commands

cp -R include/asm-i386 /tools/include/asm
cp -R include/linux /tools/include

with a side note that says if your machine is not i386 compatable to modify the first command.

ran this

cp -R /usr/include/asm /tools/include/asm
cp -R /usr/include/linux /tools/include

and got the above mentioned error.

I checked the /usr/include folder to see what asm files there were, and also found asm-generic in the include folder.

after running

cp -R /usr/include/asm-generic /tools/include/asm-generic

my glib compiled without error.

Don't give up! This is a classroom! It might well be time to back-away from it for a while, to let your mind and your sanity rest, but don't "give up" for good!
