error: cannot run compiled C programs, ch.5.9 configure 2nd pass of binutils. Stumped!

Hi all,

Going through an LFS build I get to the 2nd pass of compiling binutils, and upon trying to configure before make I receive the following error:

"checking whether C compiler works...configure: in /mnt/lfs/sources/binutils-2.30/build:
configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
If you meant to cross compile, use '--host'"

I've included my machine info, the output of the version-check script, as well as config.log. Apologies for the length, I did not want to miss anyting by not including all of config.log

I've started over 3 times now reaching this point without any errors and all the sanity checks ok. I did some googling and couldnt find specific information although I did read that the problem might be my lack of a build-essentials package, so I installed that and ran throught it again. Stumped at this point, I'm fairly inexperienced with building/compiling so I'm at a loss with how to back track as I recieve no errors up to this point and everything seems to go smoothly.

any suggestions?

Thanks!

went back to the beginning again but before I started I linked awk to gawk and yacc to bison directly instead of relying on update-alternatives. also confirmed that /bin/sh -> /bin/bash. anyway all is well, one step closer.
