What about just deleting gcc-build and gcc-4.4.3, then extracting a fresh folder, and finally compiling pass 2. And then continuing. Would that work?
Nope. Like I said before, too many things have changed when you started working on chapter 6 to "redo" packages from chapter 5 (glibc, binutils and the toolchain are probably the most important ones).

So by "starting from scratch" you mean from the very beginning? *Sigh*. All right.
But consider this: You made a mistake in chapter 5.10, which is very early in the build of chapter 5. Are you sure nothing else was impacted/went wrong? Do you trust what is build in chapter 5 enough to only re-install gcc and continue?
Ok, that said: You can always try to restore the backup you made and fix that one first. Worse thing that can happen is that you have to start over.
It is up to you to decide which way you want to go.
Hope this helps.
BTW: If you decide to restore the backup you made: First completely remove the current content of /mnt/lfs (as root: cd $LFS && rm -rf *), then restore the backup.
