Hi,

Without fonts it will not work (which seems kinda obvious ).

Quote:
but i couldn't install Xorg Font cause when installed it appear error :
'XFONT not installed' in compile configure
You don't tell which order you installed (or tried to install) the font packages. Some need to be done before others. I do believe that encodings and font-util need to be done first, then the others.

If that doesn't help:

- Is the error you gave ('XFONT not installed') the actual error?
- Which font package showed this error?

PS: I do assume you are installing Xorg 7.1, not Xorg 6.9.

Hope this helps.

yup i am installing Xorg6.9 cause i think it's more simple to install..

i don't know what font package i used, i just install Xorg6.9 and it's componet (but not Xorg Protocol header, Xor library and else because i have error when try installed Xorg library ..
'XFONT are not met' (when compile checking pkg-config)

After that i test my X windows and work and i can use xterm.. And then i want to use XFce for desktop environment, my dekstop XFce is work and appear dekstop Xfce, but when i click Xfce4 panel have found error :
** (xfce-mcs-manager-28900) : CRITICAL ** : find master : assertion 'mixer_handle != -1! failed

No fonts found ;

what should i do?? How to config or install fontconfig?? specified my PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable??

Hi,

So my assumption was incorrect, you installed Xorg 6.9 and _not_ Xorg 7.1.

It's not clear how you installed 6.9, especially this part "Xorg6.9 and it's components (but not Xorg Protocol header, Xorg library and else because i have error when try installed Xorg library" makes me wonder if you installed it the way it should.

After installing Xog 6.9 you have to skip a few chapters and continue with (parts of) X Window System Components.
All that is in between (XFree86-4.6.0 and all the chapters related to Xorg 7.1) you should not do.

The following is from Xorg 6.9:
Quote:
The Xorg fonts have been installed outside of Fontconfig's default search path of /usr/share/fonts. In order for Fontconfig to find the installed TrueType fonts, you should make symlinks to their directories. Assuming you've installed Xorg in the default prefix, run the following commands as the root user:
install -v -d -m755 /usr/share/fonts &&
ln -svn /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF /usr/share/fonts/X11-TTF
Did you do this step, seems like this could also be a reason for the problems you are having.

Although I'm not 100% sure, I do believe that the xfce errors you see are related to the font problems in X (The "No fonts found" part being a bit of a hint ).

BTW: Are there any strange entries in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

No to much to go on,

oh Xorg 6.9 is not needed to install Xorg protocol header, Xorg libraries and Xorg else, why??

But i don't have X11R6 in my file system, i just have X11 in /usr/bin/X11 when i run command
$whereis X11

i don't know whats wrong in my configuration about fontconfig because the error display cannot found any font, you should edit your fonts.conf in /etc/fonts
what we should edit that after installed Xorg, not it's installed by default??

Thanx..

Hi,

LFS gives you the possibility to install Xorg 6.9 or XFree86 or Xorg 7.1. You should choose one and stick to that one and only do those parts in the LFS book that concern the chosen X environment.

It looks like you have installed a mix of Xorg 6.9 and Xorg 7.1. Although I've never tried this myself, I do believe that the end result isn't what you were aiming for (a solid X environment).

I'm not sure if you can remove the parts of Xorg 6/7 you have already installed and redo the install of the X environment of your choice. If not you could try to reinstall the preferred X environment and hope that nothing still points to the other (old/incorrect) X env after the install is done.

Hope this helps.

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

any have wrong about mixing Xorg6 and 7?? And how about to uninstalled Xorg?

But...Finally i have found my mistake about my configuration in xc/programs/luit/parser.h which i have installed my Xorg in /usr not /usr/X11R6 so the link about fonts is wrong which should "ln -svn /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TTF /usr/share/fonts/X11-TTF" not "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF /usr/share/fonts/X11-TTF"
Now, i can used my XFce.. Thanx guys..

Now, i want to ask again , how about to insert my file xinitrc to load when i login my LFS because now i could only login XFce desktop by run command "startx" in command line.. i have edit file /etc/inittab to run initdefault to 5 and i can use xdm too but when i insert my username and password, and then only running Xorg standard (with Xterm) but XFce desktop is not running, so i must reboot and stop to run initdefault5 and edit /etc/inittab to go back to initdefault3 and i run command startx to login XFce..

Trims..

Hi,

I do believe that xdm looks for a local .xsession file to determine which window manager it has to start. If it doesn't find one it falls back to the default WM.

Create a ~/.xsession file that has startxfce4 in it.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Is there no window to put a name/passwd or is the name/passwd combo not accepted?
The latter could point to a missing xdm entry in /etc/pam.d (you need to copy login to xdm, as stated in the book).

On the other hand: You still have a mixed X (6.9/7.1) environment, which could be the cause.

Hope this helps.

yup..

now, when i created ~/.xsession, a window to put a name/password can display but when i insert that it's back again xdm (a window login again),

but, when i not yet created ~/.xsession, a window login is displayed but only wm standard is displayed on my desktop although i'm not installed XFce.. Any other file could make this repaired to login automatically to desktop environment after i put my username and password in xdm??

on the other hand, when i click a right click and click "exit", and then the display right click is not appeared again.. And why the choosen of reboot, shutdown is not there in "exit"??

Trimss...

Hi,

I really can't understand what you are saying in post #26.

Quote:

Are you saying that after entering your username/password, nothing happens and you are presented with the same login window?

Quote:

I thought you did install xfce???? If you haven't installed xfce yet, you will be presented with the default that belongs to xdm.
You do need the .xsession file (see post #23) if you want to start xfce from xdm.

These I don't understand at all.
