Weird characters in simulation software causes issues.

Hi all,
I have a slight problem with some simulation software.
The files it uses has some bracket characters inside them, such as {} or [], which are typically used in scripts and code. The issue is that the software doesn't interpret these characters properly as it loads them into a problem definition for the simulation. Any ideas what packages or utilities need to be updated to resolve this? This also happens on RedHat 6.0, OpenSuse 11.4, Fedora, Debian, essentially any recent linux distro. I can confirm that I know of systems that can run the software package flawlessly, yes it would make sense to install the distro + all the packages to mimic those systems, but let's just say I don't have that option.
Thanks for any feedback.

Also this version of software works in 32 bit editions of the aforementioned distros, just not a fresh install of the 64 bit editions.

What do you mean by “the software doesn't interpret these characters properly”? This sounds more like a problem of the application or that the wrong syntax was used in the input file. Does it provide any meaningful error message?
