The only way to make Windows programs work in Linux is by using Wine (disregarding VMWare, that is). www.frankscorner.org has details of how to make them work.
If you want to dig in your pockets a little I suggest you use crossover office from codeweavers.com. It is a great product and relatively cheap. Believe me, the time can be worth your money depending on your guru meter.

Rep:
Just to be clear, are we talking about for personal use, or for deployment in a business office (i.e. budget, multiple desktops, etc)?
I ask for two reasons
a) The recommendation may be different depending on whether you have an IT budget or just a personal budget
b) This forum was created for discussing Linux deployements in the corporate world, the existing forums such as the Software forum already cover all the aspects for personal use
