EL Linux problem

Hey everyone, I just installed EL linux AS4. Everything went great till the end. The system rebooted and went right to the login prompt. I typed in root as user and the password it asked for during the install. It then told me that root logins are not allowed - but I was on the console? Dure the install it never asked or gave me the opportunity to create antoher user? What happened? How do I log in? Ahhhh.

Thanks in advance

root logins are not allowed? I suppose some systems use sudo exclusively, so try using "sudo <command you would execute as root>". Then, who has write access to sudoers, I wonder.

Hi, thanks for the reply. But after the install the box goes to the login prompt and I can not log in so I can not use sudo. During install it never asked me to add another account so I have no option but to try and log on as root. It says root login not permited? I do not get it - how do I login?

Thanks

hrmm, maybe try 'guest' with no password? Might need to reinstall and find where it is supposed to create a user.

Hey, I tried to re-install and got the smae thing - and I never saw where to add additional users in the install process. Guest did not work either. This is very strange, if you have any other ideas I would love to hear them.

Well, if you happen to have a linux liveCD around, you can liveCD on, and try something like this as root.

mkdir /mnt/root
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/root #or if your system is installed elsewhere, then that
cd /mnt/root
chroot /mnt/root
adduser <username here>

"adduser" should prompt you for a password. Odd that such an ugly hack should be necessary tho. Hopefully someone else will give you a better solution.

Problem fixed - sorta

Ok - this is lame. You have to install X and all components or the install of EL AS 4 fails. Thats what I have learned over the past 3 days. If during the install you go to customize list of packages and uncheck kde / gnome and proceed everything looks like it goes well. Until you tryand login. So I was left no choice but to install a bunch of X crap to get the box to a point I could actually login. Then I stripped everything out afterwards.

init3 so you can get into a single-user mode then you will be able to just login as single user and adduser it.
