Disk quota setup in RHEL AS 2.4.21-20

Has anyone had any success in setting up file and directory quotas on
RedHat Enterprise AS server?, the current kernel version being
2.4.21-20.EL

If so, how did you get the kernel to compile and accept disk quota
setup?, once you get the kernel happy, how do you get the system to
accept the "edquota -u user" disk space restrictions and make them
active? I have done lots for searches on this and followed directions to
the letter but to no avail. The hold up is this crazy kernel (which by
the way you can't change it otherwise it will void the Redhat support!).
Did my adjustments in fstab, created my "quota.user & quota.group file
in sbin, remounted home and rebooted system and still no luck. Thxs for
you input.

Let me add to this again,

Has anyone had any success in setting up file and directory quotas on RedHat Enterprise AS server?, the current kernel version that I'm using is 2.4.21-20.EL
If so, how did you get the kernel to accept the disk quotas setup?,

I am trying to set dircctory quotas for my users at work. I have followed these instructions to the letter on this web site:
https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/...k-quotas.html, but when I reboot my machine, I get the following "FAILED" startup message:

"Mounting local filesystem:

Enabling local filesystems quotas: quotaon: using /home/quota.group on /dev/hdg3 [home]: No such process

quotaon: Quota format not supported in kernel.

quotaon: using /home/quota.user on /dev/hdg3 [home]: No such process

quotaon: Quota format not supported in kernel.
[FAILED]"

What gives!?!?...redhat says that their current, up2date kernel IS 2.4.21-20.EL and God forbid you try and go tampering with or try to compile or recompile their kernel, it will void your support waranty with Redhat. Waht must I do here to get this to work?

Don't throw off on the Red Hat kernel being the problem...quotas should work just fine with that kernel.

The problem is staring you in the face:

quotaon: using /home/quota.user on /dev/hdg3 [home]: No such process

..besides, I don't know why in the world you put those files there anyway.

If you claimed you read the Red Hat documentation then you didn't read it very well:

To create the quota files (aquota.user and aquota.group) on the file system, use the -c option of the quotacheck command. For example, if user and group quotas are enabled for the /home partition, create the files in the /home directory:

quotacheck -acug /home

The -a option means that all mounted non-NFS file systems in /etc/mtab are checked to see if quotas are enabled. The -c option specifies that the quota files should be created for each file system with quotas enabled, the -u specifies to check for user quotas, and the -g option specifies to check for group quotas.

If neither the -u or -g options are specified, only the user quota file is created. If only -g is specified, only the group quota file is created.

After the files are created, run the following command to generate the table of current disk usage per file system with quotas enabled:

quotacheck -avug

The options used are as follows:

*

a — Check all quota-enabled, locally-mounted file systems
*

v — Display verbose status information as the quota check proceeds
*

u — Check user disk quota information
*

g — Check group disk quota information

After quotacheck has finished running, the quota files corresponding to the enabled quotas (user and/or group) are populated with data for each quota-enabled file system such as /home.

The correct files SHOULD be aquota.user and aquota.group which are created with quotacheck command (see above).
