Cluster managment software (simple?)

Hello,

We are currently looking at "cluster management" software.

I've played around with the Red Hat Cluster manager (on CentOS) and it seems "overkill" for what we need (plus I couldn't get it to work properly).

So thinking it over in my head what we need...and we don't necessarily need a "cluster manager" perse...but more of a "services management"

Here's the scenario:

6 webservers (all hosting the same site) running apache.

I want to login to this "services manager" check off all 6 webservers and click a button that says "restart apache"

Is there software that does something similar? I don't really need all the bells and whistles of a cluster manager...just something so I can manage services on multiple servers.

Any help of advice or "did you google this" would help

For all those using twitter...this is where I"m at

#imlost

Thank You,

-C

Webmin comes with a cluster module. Among other things, from a single node you can issue commands that will execute on all (or some) at once.

Could be as simple as:
Code:
# pgrep httpd
# apachectl -k graceful

Does spacewalk provide a web ui for this? I think so. Outside of a web interface it's pretty trivial, I'd personally use func to do it from a central admin server. it's clearly not actual clustering here either way.

That's true - "cluster" in this context is a misnomer. It sounds like the real need is for multi-host service monitoring and/or restarting.

Yes at first I was looking at cluster management software...and realized that's not what I need...

I really just need a simple way (web interface preferred) to "manage services" on multiple servers from a central location...

Everything I've been looking at looks like it's overkill for what I need

I'll look into the Webmin cluster module

BTW, I just now had a chance to read about func. In spite of the lackluster (IMO) project name, it sounds pretty good - light, secure, and scriptable via my own favorite scripting language. I'll be giving that a try next, and I would recommend for custangro to do the same.

Webmin is a good solution for the original problem, but func appears to be a substantially lighter-weight solution.

@custangro: I'd be curious to know what you ultimately selected (and why), if you are willing to share.
