We have an office with approximately 20 computers and 30 people. I am puchasing a new file server, which will only be exactly that, a file server. Which version of linux do you guys think i should go with? All i need is to have access to files on this server from about 20 computers what all run windows XP. There is no need to email or domain or anything else to fancy. Any suggestions?
I would never trust anythink listed above. You need a comercial distro, because hunting bugs across the office is not a real deal. Try Xandros, it is the only distro that is looking almost EXACTLY Windows XP and it performs very similary too. Capable to run under M$ servers.
Xandros is only good as a workstation. He is looking for a file server. Debian and Slackware are two distro's aimed at being just that a server. Also as far as commerial I think SuSE and Red hat are more commercialized then Xandros.
