This is very possible, and relatively easily done. SME server will do it out of the box, take a look here: http://www.contribs.org, and here is another method using RHEL which is a little more involved: http://pbraun.nethence.com/doc/net/samba-ldap.html. I would do plenty of research, read lots, decide what you and your organisation need in terms of PDC, Backup DC's, file servers, mail servers and so forth, prior to implementation.
