I would be more inclined to recommend taking a look at Slackware. A full installation gives you pretty much every tool you'll need to do anything you want to do (no downloading a bunch of basic development tools, they're all there), plus it's rock-solid and stable. The default window manager is KDE but you can choose whichever you'd like (expect GNOME) from a list, say, Xfce if you like that or other, light-weight managers, all provided. If you really can't live without the behemoth (uh, GNOME), it's available third-party for Slackware.
