Userdir's under SuSE w/ apache

Has anyone else had problems with constant 403 messages with user directories? I've tried every permission possible and have looked at the httpd.conf file. I dont know what is wrong. I have a file (index.html) in my directory, and when I go www.mydomain.com/~user/index.html it works fine, but I need it to work with www.mydomain.com/~user/

Anyone have any ideas?

Thx

It depends on how exactly you setup Apache.
Also depends on the distro of Apache you used. Certain ones ported use different install methods.
I personally have tried a few different flavors (so to speak) and found most are pretty standard.
However, there are a few that just don't know how to port a proggie. They usually forget NOT to make it biased on their own machine.

But mainly, it depends on your directory structure. You have the htdocs? or httpdocs? dir or something to that effect.
Normally, the directory you put your index files in isn't the correct one. Try moving it.
I had to do this a few times, without diving into the actualy problem, this is a quik fix.

If that doesn't work, lemme know and I'll see what I can do from here.

I installed Apache 1.3.26 from the source. According to the httpd.conf file, the server root is in /usr/local/apache/htdocs. I don't see how this would affect my user directories though. Any clue?

Ya got me. Right off hand I can't quite remember all the details. I'll dig out my Black Book and see what I can find for you tho.

Incedenally... if ur into the book thing *i hope you are* i find that Black Book normally makes the best and most detailed documentation. Don't remember the actual publisher, but it will say Black Book for Apache, or Samba, etc.

I'll get back to you.

P.S. Try e-mailing me at dafreq@swbell.net. There I can help you better than here at work.

well if setting index.html works maybe you need to set the index page types:

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html index.htm index.shtml

in the right place.

Yeah, I checked the directoryindex before and it's set up correctly. It doesn't seem to be redirecting to the index file if you try to browse a directory. The files themselves work fine, but it's just the directories that are causing problems.
