I am starting this post to get everyones input on some research I am doing.
Below are the best distros I find for doing an Internet install of a distribution meaning all you need is an internet connection and either floppy or CD boot disk. If you know of other internet installable distros please list them and let me know your experience.
Debian 3.1 Sarge-
Requires : 1 Boot CD or 3 Floppy Disks
I installed via floppy: Easy install total download and install time via 6 MB Cable Connection 25 Minutes:
Installed Gnome & KDE 3.3 at time of installation!
Problems: Install would fail on a file at the begining of the installation but would do a retry and everything would fix itself. This happened on every computer I installed it on!
Newbie friendly install you will need to know what type of network card you have though! Debian found and installed all other hardware.
SUSE 9.2
Requires: 1 Boot CD or 5 Floppy Disks
I installed via floppy: Easy install total download and install time via 6MB cable connection 4 hours:
Installed Gnome & KDE 3.3 at time of installation!
Problems: none however the install took a long time and I could not find a mirror that would get me faster than a 200KB transfer.
Newbie friendly: Install is graphical and you will need to know your network card Suse found and installed all other hardware.
FreeBSD
Requires: 2 Floppy Disks
I installed via floppy: Confusing install but after playing around with it for about 30 minutes I finally got the installation started.
Installed in 45 minutes:
Installed MWM
I forgot to install kde through the install confusion!
Problems: Install error-ed out 7 times but would just retry and the system would start where it left off. All hardware was detected!
This install is not Newbie friendly!
These are all the distros which I have tried installing via the internet: I personally like installing over the internet since I seem to get most of the updated software with the initial install. Plus it is free and no need for wasting a day to download CD's which I will probably not use all software contained on them. Please give me your experience of internet installs of other Distros. I know Fedora core offers internet install but have not tried it yet!
