tgz vs. rpm vs. source?


Like the subject says, What are the pros and cons of installing from: rpms, slackpacks, and source. What is the diff.? Thank you

.rpm Precompiled binary

source: You use the source to compile the binary for your specific machine.

Sometimes not... You can get source RPMs and use rpmbuild to build the RPM for your system. Kind of halfway between precompiled binary and source.

source -> the best choice you have...you compile a binary thats optimized for your processor/system

.tgz -> simple tar.gz archive in most cases with precompiled binarys, most times with a description file and most times a little install script...

.rpm -> the root of all evil ^^ ...not really...but rpm systems deal with complex dependecies that sometimes lead to 'dependency hell' ... because of the RPM management loosing the 'overview'

before I'm ever gonna install another rpm based system I'll buy WindowsXP...
