sir
I've a file on the SuSE linux system. I want to run that file on the redhat linux. What are the corresponding changes that I have to make to that file. please be specific in answering i.e. for a shell script, or for a c file, java file and so on
thanks
mehtabhi
Well what kind of file are we talking about ? There shouldn't be much of a difference and you shouldn't have any problems running something that is on Suse to Redhat.
If its a shell script or such, you might just have to change some path's if that's the case, etc.
If its a program designed for Linux, there shouldn't be much of a difference in getting it to work either.
Give us more details and we can answer your question better, were in the dark here without details.
sir
thanks for the prompt reply.
the types can be a c prog, a shell file, a java prog etc. Actually I need a detailed answer. when you say changing path etc.. what exactly does it mean. Please send a detailed answer for all the files you know about. i actually have no clue about it.
thanks ... mehtabhi
I'm not understanding really what you mean by all files. Any file basically that is on your Suse OS will work on Redhat, there might just be a few minor differences in where programs are stored or commands are located at. That is what I mean by PATH. Its the PATH to a particular program or command. on your system, it might vary from distro to distro.
But to answer your question again if I'm understanding you, your files on Suse should work on Redhat.
From the general approach of the question it sounds like you want to learn about programming in general for a linux platform.
This is an in-depth subject that goes beyond the scope of a Q & A forum. Your first step would be to look at resources more suited to general programming. There are lots of books and websites available, but the first place I would look is www.tldp.org and read the linux Programmers Guide.
thanks trickykid
that was exactly what i wanted to know but i am really interested in knowing is that what is the diffrence in the path names in both the OS. can you please list these diffrences . Also give me the similar links.
thanks....mehtabhi

Say on Suse your ifconfig command is located in /sbin and on Redhat its located in /usr/sbin, that is what I mean by PATH. Its the path where programs and commands are stored to run them properly from.
Don't worry about it too much, most distro's are likely to have everything in the same place as one another.
sir,
This time I am posting the most refined question.
I would like to know that
a) What could be the possible reasons of posrting applications from SuSE to Redhat.
b) How this porting takes place on various files like
1)databases: oracle, DB2, Sybase
2)Application servers: Websphere, weblogic, tomcat
3)Custom C/C++ Applications
4)Web servers: Apache, Red Hat stronghold, Iplanet
5)Infrastructure: DNS, File/print, FTP, E-Mail
6)Messaging: Tibco, MQSeries
thanks
mehtabhi
