"does anyone have a list of all the commmands and what they do."

You can list out the commands by listing the directories where the commands reside. For example:
ls -l /bin
ls -l /sbin

Then you can find out what a command soes from the man pages, for example:
man stty

To find all of the possible command libraries list your PATH:
echo $PATH
but /bin and /sbin are probably the directories to start with.

Another thing - man pages - and either whatis or apropos.

Whatis will tell you briefly what a command does.
If you know what you want to do - but don't know the command - use apropos.
If neither of these work, try running catman -w to build the DB - and run it again.
