I don't know what kind of databases the contents of this RPM are but I want to be able to view the contents manually. More specifically, I'm trying to select out the file name, brief description that appears when selecting the file for installation during the package selection phase of the install, the Group that this file is listed under, and the CD number that this file resides on.

I'm looking for a printed reference of where to find what files, as well as what files do what.

do you mean somthing like -- rpm -qa --

If you are looking for a package in particular I would do:
rpm -qa | grep -i package_name
