Question Problem with auto update in suse 9.1 personal

I am new to Linux and have been trying out different flavors on my old pc. I kind of like SUSE 9.1 personal, but I can't get it to run any sort of online update, it always fails. All Internet functions such as web browsing and email work just fine. I really need to run this because I have a gforce card and want to enable 3d acceleration.

Also, I can see that this has been asked, but the answers meant nothing to me. How do I install and USE the gnome desktop here?

Thanks
