pdf files online

I have PClinuxOS. I cannot view pdf files from a governmental website (city offices). What are they using that I cannot view? Any ideas of what I can try so that I don't have to go the library to obtain the information I need for bimonthly city meetings?
Thanks so much for your help.

The best combination is a version of Adobe Reader (to open PDF files) and a plug-in for your web browser to allow you to open them by clicking on a link.

What browser are you using?

Do you have Adobe Reader installed, or is it available in PCLinuxOS's repositories? Otherwise you can download it directly from Adobe's web site (this version included a plugin for web browsers).

My browser is Mozilla Firefox. I do have Adobe Reader. Tell me about plug-ins and what I might need.
Thanks,
Betty

This is what mine looks like:
Code:
root@slackw:/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.7/plugins$ v
total 21
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    41 2006-10-14 20:56 flashplayer.xpt -> /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/flashplayer.xpt*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    29 2006-10-14 20:56 gxineplugin.so -> /usr/lib/gxine/gxineplugin.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    43 2006-10-14 20:56 libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    50 2006-10-14 20:56 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/lib/java/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 19496 2006-09-10 04:41 libnullplugin.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    34 2006-10-14 20:56 nphelix.so -> /opt/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    55 2006-10-14 20:56 nppdf.so -> /usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so*
My plugins are located in /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.7/plugins. In there, I made a symlink to where I installed Acrobat. The file you need to link is nppdf.so.

So basically you go into your plugins directory and issue
Code:
ln -s /path/to/your/Acrobat/installation/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so
and restart Firefox.

The currently working plugins can be seen in Firefox by opening the following address (i.e. writing it to the addres bar and hitting return):
Code:
about:plugins
If AdobeReader plugin is loaded, it's visible there along with version number etc.

What do you get when you try to open one of those documents, an error or "just nothing"?
