I have the Asus v8200 Deluxe (Geforce 3), but I can't get the hardware acceleration working. I have installed the drivers from nvidia and modified the x Config file, first using sax2 and then manually. Both times, when starting x, it freezes and gives me blank screen with one dot on the upper left corner of the screen. Reset is the only thing I can do.
I have tried (according to the nvidia boards) to add disableapic to the lilo config file and tried "modprobe NVdriver". But none of them did work. Here is my XConfig file:
heh, I've been fighting all weekend with exactly the same problem trying to get my Nvidia GForce II ultra up and running with the latest nvidia driver release on Suse7.2.
I've also tried manually editing the config file and using Sax2 (hateful little widget that it is) to set it up and get pretty much the same result that you do with the exception that my Xserver just crashes out and returns me to a command line with all the pretty suse graphics borders (I guess what you get if you dont startx)
I am not sitting in front of this Linux Box at the moment. After reading the Nvidia forum again I found two possible solutions:
Is the smp kernel activated? (There is a workaround at the nvidia forum)
Another idea: don't load glx, but load nvidia. Another user said, could at least start this way...
But please, any other ideas!!
I'm not at the machine in question until later this evening, have you got a link to that forum? I will be having another bash when I get home (though that Mandrake 8.2 distro on the front of a magazine this week is starting to look very tempting).
I'm sure it shouldnt be this difficult, its not like we are running obscure hardware, but Sax2 does appear to do some wierd stuff with the config file (what are all these Cyrillic fonts and stuff? I dont ask for them but its adds them despite all the errors they generate by not being installed). I know I have successfully managed to install Nvidias drivers and get Suse to work with them, but as ever in times like this I cant for the life of me remember what I did differently to what I am trying now.
Just out of interest, if you answer "yes" when Sax2 asks if you want 3d acceleration enabled does it turn your screen blank and require a reboot and lots of swearing before anything works again?
I use suse8 with Asus G3 Ti200 ..hardware accelaration works fine.
===> use YaST
or
1. setup using XF86config ) and then
2. in the X11 enviroment use the YaST2 to configure it well..... Hz, colors, screen adjustments... hardware accerlaration..
I use the latest nvidia drivers 1280 if I remember correctly.
I know that it works on most systems... but I can't get into X with 3D acceleration enabled.
I also figured by now that the problems isn't about bad symlinks.
I'll try to compile the drivers on my own, since I heared that they are better than the rpm's... but heck... I really have no idea what's happening
I have to admit I gave up in the end. A copy of Mandrake appeared on a mag cover disk this month and I've installed that instead to get the desired video options up and running.

Ahhh... i feel like doing to do the same thing, but I don't want to give up yet. I think, wheter SuSe, Mandrake or anything else, it is still Linux and there has to be a way to make it work!
Know what you mean, I just got past the stage where fixing it became a challenge and hit the point where being stuck on 1024x768 meant perpetually booting back into that OS that shall not be named just to get the things I wanted to do sorted out so I could go an do battle with the video vcard again.
If you do manage to get it working I'd be interested to hear what you did, its not outside the realms of possbility that I'll try again with Suse in the near future (I am a dab hand at breaking systems).
Well, i'm still not lucky: I have recompiled the kernel for the sake of beeing able to compile the nvidia drivers on my own -> no success.
Then, I compiled X from scratch, which didn't solve my problem either.
I have looked through the log file, and it stops when it is trying to set the resolution 1280*1024 - which is supported by the chip (GeForce3) and the monitor (Samsung 900SL, 19").....
I really don't want to wipe out Suse putting on Slack, since I loose a lot of software on CD's and I can't afford to buy another distro
I just put in 3d for fun but the difference i see in the xfconfig file is that i got a section like that:
# This loads the GLX module
Load "glx"
Load "GLcore"
Load "dri"
Load "extmod"
But i use xf4.1 and you seem to use xf3.x so that might not do anything at all for you.
Interesting - you put in GLcore and dri as well... i'm going to try this - btw, I'm using X4.2
What does dri stand for? I never heard about this module? thanks
Well, this didn't work either - it said it cannot load the dri module. But I have a second machine running slack 8.1. Here, 3d is working fine and there is no dri module - the XFConfig file looks like the one I posted.
