I have tried ubuntu's live cd and it was slow. yes the cd i am using is not the fastest but i have had kanotix run reasonably well for a while but then got bogged down. mepis couldn't detect monitor settings properly. in any case i would really like to use a gnome based version anyway. suggestions? TIA
I might be wrong but i think that gnoppix is based on ubuntu...and i know that that is SLOOOOOWWW on my machine at work. but i will give it a shot. thank you both for the suggestion.
basically, if your computers is a bit slow then any distro/live cd with KDE or gnome is going to be pretty slow. maybe ubuntu is slightly slower than, say, slackware, but nonetheless the window manager adds a lot of performance overhead, so maybe your machine just isnt up to it.
just to clarify, gnoppix is now based on ubuntu rather than knoppix. although both knoppix and ubuntu are based on debian they are somewhat different in some regards.
i'm not making this ubuntu thing up. go to the gnoppinx website. the gnoppix logo has the ubuntu logo as the 'O'.............
anyway. and knoppix is using kde rather than gnome. again they are fairly different..........
