I just switched from Mandrake 10 because Suse is more polished and seems less buggy. Also, when I tried to install Mandrake 10 on a friend's box, it just could not figure out what to do with the ATI video card. Suse installed and ran perfectly. Mandrake tends to use bleeding-edge software whereas Suse tends to go for reliable software. They're both pretty awesome though.

until a mod notices it and sends it to general. You'd have made the posts, but you'd not see them in the count (but not yet for here).

Personally, I don't like answers like "Slackware is the best." I thought Slackware was rough looking, difficult to administer, and I never could get it to run very long without breaking it. So for me, Slackware was the worst. For others, Slackware is awesome; it's just not for me.

It's all so subjective that it's impossible to answer the question.

See, that's what I mean. The Slackware people love it to death. I know a guy who thinks Debian is purest and most stable Linux distro around. Another guy thinks Gentoo is God's gift to computing.

And people will fight with you about their favorite distro.

As an intellegent and moderate person, I would recommend setting aside some time and try all the major ones and see what you like best. I have tried 10 to 15 different distros and I currently like Suse.

I like Ubuntu! Easy to use, nice n' simple, everything works. Of course, I have a ppc and there's no KDE (which is fine with me). So some poeple won' tlike it. Subjective subjectivity. :>)

umm... the one that is on the cover of the cheapest magazine

I have tried Red Hat and Mandrake, current system is Mandrake...

Yeah, this one has been done to death. I would like to say congrats and thanks to everyone who has kept this a nice grown up discussion.
the point is to just get one and try it. It is not that hard to wipe a harddrive and start over. If you are looking for your first distro, I would say Mandrake, but thats just me... but the CD on a magazine works well too.... That's how I got Mandrake.
Jump in and have fun!!

Oh and another one: the best distro is the one that keeps you off windows.

(with one unused windows partition... maybe I could put slack on it... )

i've tried arch.....and would still take slackware over it.SuSE will always be on my main though.(distros listed are all currently running ones on seprate machines..... )
underground desktop (debian sid) is a current fave......although it's sad it's no longer maintained and never made it out of beta status.makes the celeron 667mhz machine it's on fly.
