If new linux....

Hey all.

Quirky question here.

Just wondering:
If I were to decide, kinda already did and am about half way done, to basically re-write my own version of a distro, how should I go about the naming convention?

This started out as an embedded project at work, but it kinda got tossed between bosses, go figure, and now they want to see what we can do with it.
I'm about halfway complete now. Basically, since the start of the embedded project, and working with LFS, I've pulled together core components from about 13 different distros, re-written a majority of the code in it as well.
I know this sounds a bit like an LFS, but it's not.

The reason for the code re-write was that the company wanted to have something that was more particular in what we needed, but there were alot of things they saw that needed to be "re-thought" so to speak... a bit more complex, as I'm sure you are aware with corporate politics...
anyway as I ramble on... if I decided to finish re-writing the rest of this, it would basically be a full re-write. So if I chose to distro it, any ideas?

any of that make any sense?

Well, if your company were to release the distro, then it would normally be called something like Companyname Linux, for example: RedHat Linux; Mandrake Linux; SuSE Linux, etc... If, however, you were to release it yourself, then you could name it whatever you liked. Since it's aimed at embedded devices (I did read that right, didn't I?) then something that identifies it with the device would be a start. Obviously the name doesn't have to have anything to do with anything - if I were to release a distro of my own, I'd probably call it Thymix, for obvious reasons

Thymix... that'd be a pretty good distro name actually. Kinda has a nice chyme to it. So to speak.

Tnx. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to step on GPL toes, or what not.

But the release won't be for embedded. Well, a release would be, but I'd probably finish it up to where it could be ported to most archs. Gotta get my I-64 back so I can try to tweak it in as well.

Tnx.

Cool, your own distro. Now I know about 3 projects to do a distro, yours plus RedDawn Linux, he posts on the http://linuxiso.org/forums/index.php as RedDawn
The guys over at http://213.232.90.30/ are doing one called Outlaw Linux

Well, I figure I'll have:
1) distro for embedded systems
2) distro for x86 arch
3) try to put one together for sun arch and I-64. Altho that will most likely require alot more coding than I have time for right now.

I guess I'll have to come up with a few catchy names just to at least grab the attention of fellow *nixrz. Probabloy wont be the best, but that's what OPEN is for eh? kewl.

Or, maybe a distro name poll here? ... or not. I dunno.

Well, did you want to incorporate part of your handle, or something unique? If the former, then:
FrEQuix / Free Kicks

Well, I'm not quite sure. I could probably rant forever on a particular name, cuz I'm just that wired sometimes, but unsure exactly.

It is a pretty big project for only one person, so I would kinda like to personalize it.
FreeQuix isn't bad. But DaFrEQ has been with me forever. Got it waaaay back before the army.

I'll have to ponder it awhile. But then again, I don't know exactly when it will be done either. so...
tnx.
