Post I would like recommendations... (non urgent)

Alright, first off, I would like to first get this out of the way...
I have tried some live cds of linux, some distros of linux, and sort of familiarized myself with linux, and I still consider myself a newbie to linux...
And I would like some recommendations for a possible distro to use...

Ive looked into gentoo, and I would eventually like to use such a distribution, but I dont think i have enough knowledge of linux to install it.

Ive looked into suse, and I have seen that its a great beginners os, but ive noticed that the current disto for suse is around 5 cds, or 1 dvd, and I would rather not use such a large distro. Also, im not shure if the older distros for suse would be as good as the newer ones...

Ive used Damn small linux, and I really like how it works... but for some reason make dosnt seem to work on it, and when i try using apt-get for it, dpkg gives me an error...
(E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1))

So I guess im looking for a good, minimal, beginners distro (if there is such a thing)
... maybe rpm based? (although this doesnt have to be)
In advance, thanks for any help!

I'm currently hooked on debian and its apt- package manager.

Boot off disk 1, partition drives accordingly and install only bare minimum.

Then apt-get install anythingyoupossiblycanthinkof.

It fast, agile and you have alot of control (short of a gentoo).

Also, slack 10.2 is still the fastest booting OS i have ever used. It too is small, and a good mix of trying to learn linux, and needing to get actual work done.

All the rpm based distro's seem to be quite heavy, Fedora Core is now up to 5 CDs, Mandriva is 4 last time I checked.

Ubuntu is 1 CD, is an easy install and very easy to use.

Head over to distrowatch.org and have a read of the reviews, only you know exactly what you want therefore your in the best position to choose a distro for yourself

Fedora Core is 4 cds and not 5. Mandriva is 3 and has always been 3 unless you are a club member. You are not forced to install everything, so the number of CD's that a distro occupies is irrelevant. Look at Debian 14 CD's, but most people only need a fraction of the packages available.

Debian officially comes in 14CDs. Did I scare you?

This doesn't mean you'll be needing several GBs for a base install. This means you have a lot of packages. You can choose to install only what you require.

It has a very nice GUI package handling tool based on apt-get known as "Synaptic". It even has new "Smart Package Manager" in it.

Sorry, my mistake.

Edit:

uhmm Fedora Core 4 x86_64 is 5 Cds actually, I just assumed all the other archs would have the same number of CDs.

PCLinuxOS is one CD, as is Blag--both are RPM-based.
