How do you like Xandros?

I have the Xandros ISO, just dont have any CDR's right now. Anyways Im rather excited to try it out. From what Ive read (and experienced with RPM distros) Debian based distros have a big advantage. I know Xandros is meant to be very user freindly, and Id like that in a Linux OS. But Im wondering if it tries to be Windoze like Lycoris does? Lycoris is a blatant imitation of XP, and if I wanted to use XP, I would.....use XP. I dont want to use XP but I do want an easy to use Linux that my wife and I can use as our only OS. So is Xandros cool, or just another cheesy imitator?

read what Xandros says about itself, burn the CDs, and try it yourself. that's the only way you'll really know.

As for me, I stopped at Xandros's description of itself. I have no use for a Linux company that hangs its hat on the M$ hat rack.

getting linux to as many users as possible is a good thing. *gulp* if someone learn linux using lindows that's still one less ms license being paid. another instance of linux mind share is a good thing. in time they will migrate to that which is better.

I've been using Xandros off and on for a couple of months now and one thing for sure....it is nothing like windows XP, 2000, or any other M$ Windows version. It is definitely a Linux Distro and from my limited experience, quite a good one if you are new to Linux.
It is a debian distro which means using 'apt-get xxxxx install' from console finds, downloads and installs numerous deb packages, it will also install rpm's and supports a lot of of the hardware other distros have problems with....particularly nVidia graphics cards.
I have almost got to the stage where I can ditch Muppetsoft XP........not quite, but definitely working on it Like any OS it's not perfect but IMHO it's not too far away.

OK Ive installed it and have used it for a few days. The installation is absolutely brainless. As long as you know you need a separate swap partition its so simple. My ntfs partition is already configured and right there in the file manager. I like the way its laid out and the default intall is not bloated with 12 email clients and 6 web browsers . My display was configured properly also which is the first time Ive installed Linux I havent had to fiddle with the refresh rate and resolution.

It doesnt feel like a M$ ripoff either. This is defintiely Linux. It still suffers from dependency problems like all Linux distros Ive tried. Its very confusing for a newbie when it tells you you need 6 packages. You go to install them, but you dont know what order they need to be installed in. Maybe your supposed to write a list?? I also have had alot of trouble with apt-get, in fact have yet to successfully download and configure an app this way. I think that if the software installation process is made as easy as Windoze (not downloading software from the Xandros network, but installing any app), then Linux will truly be a serious threat to M$.

Boom, where did you get the ISO from? I looked on their site and didn't see a download button......or was I just having a bad day?

I've read the bumf and if its as slick as it says it is, it might be a viable OS for me to give to the people I build PC's for. SuSe is OK for me, but I wouldn't want to give it to some of the people I deal with, it would be a disaster!

Cheers

I'd like to give it a whirl too, but unfortunately I think the only option is buying it ...

Just be careful when buying it. Most of the "features" that they tout are only supplied in the "Deluxe" version.

Weired about your dependency troubles.
The big advantage of apt, is that it handles dependencies for you. If you do apt-get install evolution and don't have the gnome libs installed, it just tells you that they are not installed, and ask if you want to proceed, then it installs all dependencies & evolution for you. Maybe it's some rpm packages you have tried to install....

Yeah, I was a Xandros Beta Tester since it's birth. It's qiute a good distro for newbies. I personally prefer Mandy 9.0 becuase it is powerful aswell as simplistic. But Xandros is nice. Let me know if you have any problems....

** Takes out XANDROS 1.0 BETA TESTER and stares for a minute or two... ** :-D

I use it on a dual boot with XP pro. Overall I like it, that being said there are some things about it that are annoying to me.

You have to be careful what you download and install from any user added links on the sourcelist. Xandros has 'tampered' with lots of things and you may break part of it. You just have to wait until Xandros gets around to modifying things to work right.

No KDE 3, they have XFM (which is nice.. to me it beats the hell out of Konqurer as a file manager.. does have a very Windows Explorer feel to it though.. one of the reasons I like it) and at the moment it won't work with KDE 3 or any other Window manager you install. From what I understand Xandros was waiting for KDE3.1 to be officially released before they started getting it to work with XFM and a few other Xandros modified apps.

Xandros network ( one update utility) is slow, use synaptic (not installed and not available with the default sources list) and download the Xandros packages that way.

Xandros claims to be able to connect easily to a windows network... not so. It comes with an easy configuration tool but it doesn't work as well as I was lead to believe. I have yet to be able to connect and view my shared folders on my server. However, I can see the server and my computer upstair (which for some reason I can access the shared folder on) and I connect to the internet through my server just fine.

I'm not bashing Xandros in any way, despite these things I've listed, I still have less problems with it than I do with other Distros. I do hate how Xandros modifies things though.. have to wait forever for them to release an update because they had to make some changes to it.. usually all because of XFM. (As I said, I like XFM more than any other file manager I've tried, but damn, they put way too much emphesis on it)

I concur with what prophet621 has said, with the exception of not being able to access a windows network. Ever since I beta tested the very first beta I have been able to access all the windows shares on my network and othe linux shares. The network is about the thing Xandros does best. Other than that, I concur with prophet621 fully.
