help with installing java runtime for firefox on dynebolic distro

Hello all,
I'm still trying to figure out installing java runtime on dynebolic so when I'm surfing sites that require it can operate correctly. I've been trying to solve this on and off for a few months and have had no success. I was able to install the flash plugins with no problem by creating a ~/.user/mozilla/plugins/flash_files_here directory and dropping the flash files into it. My distro ver is 2.4.2. I'm trying to do all of this as a root user. Has anyone else been successful with java runtime and dynebolic. I dual boot most of the time and use slack as my main system and had no problems with installing java runtime on it, but recently have had a growing need for multimedia usage and dyne is fast with multimedia, all though sometime unstable at times. I'm hoping this forum is a lot more helpful with dyne than dynebolics own mailing list and web site have been in the past. Thanks in advance.

Hi there

Can't say I ever heard of your distro before, but do not let that fool you since it is pretty standard fare, no matter what distro you run.

See, Firefox, as a mozilla based application, needs a link to the JRE in order to work.

cd ~/.mozilla/plugins
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_11/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

Two notes for the above
1: You may have a different architecture, so choose yours from the available
2: The location where you installed the JRE may be different from mine. To find out where yours got installed, issue:
updatedb
locate libjavaplugin_oji\.so

The backslash is necessary to prevent the dot from being misinterpreted.

After all that, restart your Firefox by closing *all* windows first, including, but not limited to, the download window.

Type in google: test java and enjoy the wonders of Just In Time compilation technology

Dynebolic

It's one of those CD based Distros, not a usual traditional type, not sure how to describe it. Squash file system type. I might have to look into the module development side of things to get some more clues on how to solve this problem. The method you describe here is what I have used in the past with slack with no problems at all. With this Distro running the updatedb then locate give me the following screen output:

[d:b] ~ #locate libjavaplugin_oji\.so 10:35
locate: warning: database `/usr/var/lib/updatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/audio/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/image/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/network/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/text/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/video/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/wine/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/xfce/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/audio/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/image/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/network/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/text/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/video/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/wine/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
locate: warning: database `/opt/xfce/var/lib/locatedb' is more than 8 days old
zsh: 13340 exit 1 locate libjavaplugin_oji\.so

I think this opt area is a special compressed area in which I need to place the java stuff but it reports a read only file system error when I try to copy things to it and I am the root user by default with this Distro. I guess it's another month or so of trying to track down more info or hopefully find someone who has done this before on a dynebolic system. I find it hard to believe a multimedia oriented Distro would not come with flash and java runtime pre configured as browser plugins. Maybe it's version related and if I roll back a verion for testing might be an idea after all there first release version came with an auto cluster feature and other versions later did not. This is one of those I would really like to figure it out but it's just an experimental Distro for me at this time so it's not urgent just aggravating and fun at the same time. They did mention briefly My main Distro which is running fine is Slackware.
