have you tryed to boot into txt mode and editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
sometimes you need to specify usable dispaly modes...
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"

1) You can in fact reuse the whole PCLOS xorg.config file in Debian based OS's.
(I did so for Ubuntu 7.10) #Uncomment (line 29?) Load "type1"
and edit mouse (line 54?) to : Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" as an example.
(When Dexconf makes no X for my Compaq's FP730A and TFT5005)
2) I checked my "computer 2" with geforce 6600 dvi/vga. (PCLOS2007 + 2008 and more)
The driver is version 100.14.11 (a habit from Slackware, downloaded / compiled),
perhaps the version is important ?
Ubuntu and alike might use a different one.
3) The real issue might be the monitor, VendorName "Generic" (for flat panel)
is often better than being specific.
4) Never had any problems with "6600" =>CRT: 13"..19" and odd flat panels 14"..21"
and all kinds of distro's.
Good luck !
