I recently installed Fedora Core 1....(FC 2 is apparently unstable and FC 3 won't use my NIC)
Nice distribution that detected everything at the install level and all works fine...
The problem I have is that when I click on the Redhat network wizard to get all the errata, security updates etc....it hangs at the package installation stage (all downloads etc are fine...)
I want a secure system where I can do my banking ......file taxes etc.
I installed Dag Wieers RPM repository and got upgrades from Dries, Dag, Ayo, Freshrpms and newrpms
Everything is working as I want it to !!!
Do I need to do anything else to secure my machine ??? (Like a dist-upgrade)
What about CHKROOTKIT ?? Do I need it with no server stuff installed (desktop only) ??
If so, How do I correct infections it finds ??
Sorry for what are probably stupid questions...
I've been researching Linux for quite a while (gave up studying for A+ cert although am still fixing friends boxes infected with spyware) and really like the OS !!!!
"Do I need to do anything else to secure my machine ??? (Like a dist-upgrade)"
I ran FC1 for about 6 months. I never even looked to see if FC1 had security updates much less install them. I never had any security problems.
This does not mean that I distain security updates. I am up to date with security upgrades on my current Linux OS. But in the 5 years that I have used Linux I have never had a virus, trojan horse, or other malware, regardless whether I keep up to date on security updates or not.
