If I wanted to install a distro on a legacy 486 PC with limited disk space (as little as possible) and limited Ram (~16MB) are there any that would be best? I'd like to stick with the KDE desktop if I can and I guess I might want to run Star Office.
You can try smaller distro's they have out there. Like Peanut Linux, minimum install is like 55 megs. There is Thinlinux and others as well. Try doing a search on linux.com or a major linux site and they usually have long lists of all the Linux distro's that exist.
There is a pretty meaty list at http://www.linux.org/dist/english.html some of which are aimed at very small installs. 16MB of RAM is actually not that bad for Linux, although X apps will give you hassle so you might want a reasonable amount of swap space. I've had a friend who's been using Peanut linux for quite a while and loves it so I'd look into Tricky's suggestion if I were you.

Peanut Linux looks excellent - unfortunately after three attempts from different FTP sites I've still only managed to get the small.iso half (35-50 MB) downloaded before the connection breaks
. . . will try again when I've thought of a way to get the whole iso . . .
