Developing Distro

I'm on a team developing a distro (wanting to base it off of Gentoo). Also making a LiveCD. A question.

Is it possible to use Gentoo as a backbone but to create our own custom installer?

The folks at Sabayon used Anaconda with Gentoo. You might want to ask them how they did it.
